Skilled Worker Visa English Changed from B1 to B2: What Applicants Need to Know
The old B1 advice is no longer the main rule. From 8 January 2026, most people making a new UK Skilled Worker application must show English at CEFR B2 across reading, writing, speaking and listening.
B2 is now the main rule, but not every applicant starts from the same position
Most first-time Skilled Worker applicants and people switching from another route now need B2 English. However, current GOV.UK guidance preserves B1 treatment for some people who already held Skilled Worker permission before the change.
The first question is therefore not "Which English test should I book?” It is "Which rule applies to my exact application, and do I already have accepted evidence?”
Who needs B2, and who may remain under the B1 transition?
These are general starting points drawn from current Skilled Worker guidance. Your application facts and previous permission determine the evidence you need.
New Skilled Worker application
Most people applying for the Skilled Worker route for the first time need CEFR B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
Switching from another visa route
If you are switching from a route other than Health and Care Worker, current guidance says you need B2.
Held Skilled Worker permission before 8 January 2026
If you are extending or updating that permission, GOV.UK states that the B1 requirement continues and you do not need to prove English again.
Switching from Health and Care Worker
Current GOV.UK guidance states that you do not need to provide proof of English again when switching from Health and Care Worker.
Intermediate English
This remains relevant to specified transitional applications, including some people who held Skilled Worker permission before 8 January 2026.
Upper-intermediate English
This is the current threshold for most new Skilled Worker applicants and people switching from other visa routes.
Five ways the English requirement may be met
Do not pay for a test until you have checked whether another accepted route already applies to you.
Previous successful evidence
Evidence shown in an earlier successful immigration application may carry forward when it meets the level required for the current application.
Eligible nationality
Nationals of countries currently listed in the Immigration Rules as majority English-speaking may meet the requirement through nationality.
School or academic qualification
An eligible UK school English qualification or qualifying degree may be accepted. Overseas qualifications may require confirmation from the designated assessment provider.
Approved four-skills SELT
If another pathway does not apply, you may need an approved Secure English Language Test covering all four required skills at the correct level.
Professional registration assessment
Doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives and veterinarians may meet the rule through an English assessment accepted by the relevant UK professional regulator for registration.
Check the exact visa route first
Skilled Worker, family, settlement, student and other routes can require different English levels and different combinations of skills.
Book a test approved for SELT use
A standard English examination may be accepted for university or employment but still not be the correct secure version for a visa application.
Confirm all four skills are assessed
The Skilled Worker route requires evidence across reading, writing, speaking and listening when a test is used. A speaking-and-listening-only test is not enough.
Verify the provider and approved location
The approved provider list differs depending on whether the test is taken inside or outside the UK. The exact test centre also matters.
Check the result date
Current Home Office guidance states that a SELT result used for an application must normally have been awarded within the previous two years.

Provider names, test versions and available centres can change. Check the current Home Office list immediately before paying.
Six mistakes the 2026 rule change makes especially important
The wrong assumption can mean an unnecessary test, the wrong test or preparation for the wrong score.
Preparing for B1 because an old page still ranks in search
Many pre-2026 articles still describe B1 as the universal Skilled Worker standard. That is now outdated for most new applications.
Assuming every existing visa holder must reach B2
The transitional rule matters. Some people who already held Skilled Worker permission before 8 January 2026 remain under B1 arrangements.
Booking standard IELTS rather than IELTS for UKVI
Where a SELT is required, the secure UKVI-approved test version and approved location must be used.

Skilled Worker English questions after the B2 change
What English level is required for a UK Skilled Worker visa in 2026?
Most new applicants and people switching from a route other than Health and Care Worker need CEFR B2 in reading, writing, speaking and listening. Transitional B1 arrangements apply to specified existing route holders.
Do existing Skilled Worker visa holders need B2 when extending?

Can I retake only one IELTS skill for UKVI?
