From 8 January 2026, most people making a new application under the UK Skilled Worker route must prove that they can read, write, speak and understand English to at least Level B2 on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages, commonly known as the CEFR.
B2 is generally described as an upper-intermediate level. At this level, a person should be able to understand the main ideas of more complex information, communicate with a reasonable degree of fluency and produce clear, detailed English.
The English requirement applies to all four components:
- Reading
- Writing
- Speaking
- Listening
Important: Not every applicant needs to take an English test. You may be able to meet the requirement through your nationality, qualifications, previous visa application or professional registration.
2. The Four Main Ways to Prove Your English
You can usually meet the Skilled Worker visa English requirement through one of the following routes.
1. Nationality
Nationals of certain majority English-speaking countries and territories do not usually need to provide separate evidence of their English ability.
2. UK School Qualification
You may use an eligible GCSE, A Level, Scottish National Qualification, Scottish Higher or Advanced Higher in English that you began while under 18 at a UK school.
3. Degree Taught in English
An eligible degree awarded by a UK institution can be used. A degree awarded outside the UK may require an Ecctis assessment confirming its UK equivalence and that it was taught in English.
4. Approved SELT
If you cannot use another proof pathway, you may need to pass an approved Secure English Language Test at the required B2 level.
Nationality Exemptions
The current Skilled Worker guidance lists nationals of the following countries and territories as not needing to prove their knowledge of English:
- Antigua and Barbuda
- Australia
- The Bahamas
- Barbados
- Belize
- British overseas territories
- Canada
- Dominica
- Grenada
- Guyana
- Jamaica
- Malta
- New Zealand
- St Kitts and Nevis
- St Lucia
- St Vincent and the Grenadines
- Trinidad and Tobago
- United States of America
3. Transitional Arrangements and Healthcare Professionals
Existing Skilled Worker Visa Holders
If you held a Skilled Worker visa before 8 January 2026 and you are applying to extend or update it, the B1 requirement may continue to apply.
The current GOV.UK guidance also states that these applicants do not normally need to prove their knowledge of English again.
Switching From a Health and Care Worker Visa
If you are switching from a Health and Care Worker visa, you may not need to provide proof of English again.
If you are switching from most other visa categories, you will normally need to meet the B2 Skilled Worker requirement.
Doctors, Dentists, Nurses, Midwives and Vets
Doctors, dentists, nurses, midwives and vets may not need to provide separate proof if they have already passed an English language assessment accepted by their relevant UK professional regulatory body.
Your circumstances and immigration history can affect which requirement applies. Always check the latest official Skilled Worker guidance before submitting an application.
4. Approved Secure English Language Tests
When a test is required, you must take an approved Secure English Language Test, known as a SELT, from an approved provider and at an approved test location.
Skilled Worker applicants relying on a SELT need a test that assesses reading, writing, speaking and listening.
| Provider | Approved test name | Availability |
|---|---|---|
| IELTS SELT Consortium | IELTS for UKVI | Inside and outside the UK |
| Pearson | PTE Academic UKVI | Inside and outside the UK |
| LANGUAGECERT | LANGUAGECERT Academic SELT or LANGUAGECERT General SELT | Inside and outside the UK |
| Trinity College London | Secure English Language Tests for UKVI, including Integrated Skills in English | Inside the UK |
| PSI Services (UK) Ltd | Skills for English UKVI | Outside the UK |
Approved providers, test centres, test names and minimum scores can change. Check the current Home Office list before booking.
Your test must normally:
- be included on the approved SELT list
- be taken at an approved test location
- assess the skills required for the Skilled Worker route
- have been awarded within the two years before your visa application
5. Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Booking a standard test instead of a UKVI SELT: A general or academic English test is not automatically approved for immigration purposes.
- Booking the wrong test type: The Skilled Worker route requires evidence across reading, writing, speaking and listening.
- Using an unapproved test centre: The provider and test location must both be approved.
- Assuming every applicant needs B2: Transitional rules or previous proof may apply to some existing visa holders.
- Assuming you must take a test: Your nationality, school qualification, degree or professional regulatory assessment may already meet the requirement.
- Relying on an old test result without checking: SELT results are generally valid for two years.
- Using different personal details: The details used to book your test should match your valid identity document.
