University admission rules, visa requirements and individual test versions are not always the same. Use this guide to identify what applies to you, compare common English tests and prepare for university study with confidence.

GOV.UK currently states an English level equivalent to B2 for degree-level study or above and B1 for study below degree level.
"IELTS,” "IELTS Academic” and "IELTS for UKVI Academic” are not interchangeable names. Other providers also offer standard and UKVI versions.

IELTS Academic is designed for higher education. IELTS for UKVI Academic is the secure UKVI version. Book the UKVI version when your university, offer, CAS or visa instructions specifically require it. When the wording is unclear, ask the university to confirm the exact test name.
Not necessarily. The visa rules set an immigration standard, while the university can set a higher score or additional component requirements for admission to a particular course.
At degree level or above, an eligible higher-education provider may be able to assess English itself for the Student route. The institution must confirm whether this applies to your application and how it will be recorded.
Some universities and courses accept these tests, but acceptance is not something to assume. Check the programme’s official admissions page and confirm the test version, score and delivery format.
These are the separate results for skills such as Reading, Writing, Listening and Speaking. A university may require a particular overall score while also stating that no individual skill can fall below a specified minimum.
It may be accepted in some circumstances, but admission and visa evidence are separate decisions. An overseas qualification may also require additional verification. Ask the university what documents it accepts before relying on this route.
Begin by comparing your current level with the required score. Allow enough time for language development, test practice, result processing and a possible retest. Your preparation period should reflect the size of the gap rather than a single standard timetable.
